Driven by curiosity and various demands, I was constantly searching for a new, different or „better“ bass sound, or even trying to create a fictional sound. My job as a bass salesman allowed me to test a lot of bass equipment, and I owned a huge collection of basses and parts (mostly US basses and parts from the 70s…).
experimented with numerous modifications and gained experience in a wide variety of live and studio settings, from intimate clubs and musical theaters to concert halls and stadium stages at open-air festivals.
In addition to the two sides: 1) the bass player and 2) the bass seller, there is now a third side: 3) the bass maker.
I wouldn’t call myself a „luthier“ here, firstly because I didn’t attend any official school to become a guitar maker, and secondly because a bass isn’t a guitar, and I specialize in (electric) basses.
The short story: My requirement: I needed a 5-string that sounded like a double bass, or at least acoustic, in the studio, live, and on loud stages. (In-ear monitors weren’t a thing back then in the early 2000s). You couldn’t just buy something like that back then (in Germany), so I drew, designed, researched, etc., met up with some nerds from the German bass-making scene, and commissioned a first prototype. A few months later, I was invited to participate in the joint bass-making booth at the Frankfurt Music Fair. That was in 2006, so 20 years ago—oh, an anniversary—yeah! !
Of course, I’ll tell the longer story another day ;-)
How it started…
this is a story wich I will tell a little later. maybe not here at this place …
please be patient and come back sometime ;-)
